Coil basketry is my go-to winter project. It’s great for curling up on the couch on a dark PNW evening when the mood strikes me to craft. Its a natural material weaving styles that doesn’t require soaking or misting or mellow plants. And pine needle coil basketry…even better! It’s pretty easy to forage usable needles in our area, they are simple to harvest & store, don’t take up much room, and you don’t need a lot of tools.
My approach to pine needle coil basketry is a simple one - learn a good basic stitch, how to start on a base, how to start without a base and then let your imagination go wild. So that’s what I want to offer you.
In this 4 week series (10 classroom hours), we will:
Learning about harvesting, cleaning and storing needles
How to start weaving on a base & how to start weaving without a base
How to build up your shape & finish your basket(s)
TWO SPECIAL THINGS
1) No homework. If you want to weave between sessions, great. If you don’t, that’s okay too. And if you have to miss a class, no problem. Running a little late, no big deal. This is YOUR TIME each week to give yourself an opportunity to set down everything else and create.
2) Unlimited Pine Needles!!! You will have all the needles you can use in class, some to take home between class (if you want…see #1) and more to take home at the end. :)
With these 2 things in mind, I’m hoping you will finish at least two small baskets - one with a base and one without. Regardless of how big or how many you make the world of pine needle basketry will be open to you.
